LADY BLUE DEVILS TAKE HOME SIX WHAC AWARDS
The Lawrence Tech Women’s Lacrosse Team took home six awards from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) for achievements on and off the field of competition.
Heading the list of student-athlete honorees is transfer student and co-captain Alyssa Shaver. She is one of 12 players to be named All-Conference First Team. The offensive specialist finished the season ranked second in the country in total groundballs with 61, third in goals with 68, fourth in points with 83, and 15th in assists with 15. Shaver matched her on-field success with a good performance in the classroom and qualified for the All-Academic Team with her 3.42 GPA in psychology.
Making the All-Conference Honorable Mention Team were two freshmen, Kadijah Kalo and Kendra Venema.
Kalo, a midfielder, played the role of “Robin” to Shaver’s “Batman” persona, finishing the season ranked third in the country in total groundballs with 57, fourth in assists with 21, tenth in points with 63, and 11th in goals with 42.
Co-captain Venema led a defense that was ranked fourth in the WHAC for caused turnovers with 8.20 per game. Individually, she ranked 10th in the nation in caused turnovers with 20, 34th in draw controls with 14, and 36th in groundballs with 31.
Another award winner was goalie Alyse Finley. Despite not having any lacrosse experience prior to the season, Finley walked on and stepped between the pipes to rank second in the WHAC in saves per-game with 10.40 and ninth nationally in total saves with 119. Her efforts were recognized by being selected to the Champions of Character Team – awarded to student-athletes that represent the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
Finley may still be new to lacrosse but academically she is an experienced junior, carrying a 3.78 GPA in architectural engineering. She joins Shaver on the All-Academic Team, as only academic juniors or seniors with a 3.25 GPA or higher are eligible.
